Weight-loss to Race

Writer's picture: Keenan TullyKeenan Tully

It's January 2016. I was 16 years old, and extremely overweight for my age, sitting in at 18.6 stone/260 lbs. I was depressed, anxious to be seen, scared to go out and mix with people and communicate outside of my comfort. This also brought on quite a severe stutter whenever I would talk to someone.

I had a dream in sight. I knew from the moment I got introduced in to racing, and introduced into NASCAR, that it was what I wanted to. But, I knew I wasn't going to get there at the weight I was. Something clicked in my brain, and made me change. It was the only way my racing career would then be able to progress.

My birthday was on January 26th, so I made it my goal to start my transformation on January 27th. My target weight was 12 stone, and I wanted to hit it by the end of that year.

My diet of choice was slimming world. I told myself I wasn't going to have a single day off the diet until i reached my target weight. Slimming World was an awesome diet! It allows you to still eat things you love, but in moderation, and so that you still take in all the necessary fats, sugars, proteins etc. That way you don't go hungry and your health isn't at risk.

I had an extreme amount of determination and will power. I ended up having two days off the diet in total. and I reached 12 stone and 4lbs by October that year, a total of 87lbs in 10 months!

Hopefully this shows you that if you put your mind to anything, you stay consistent, and keep your goal in sight, you can achieve anything you wan't in life. I am now the healthiest I have been in probably around 10 years, and extremely excited to see where my future climbing the NASCAR ladder takes me.
